Kevin the Female Gaze Guy
Recently on tik tok, a new star has risen and his name is Kevin. In a series of thirst traps, Kevin managed to capture the hearts of several women on tik tok who declared him a master of the female gaze. Note here that only a couple of women said this. Sometimes women can be wrong. One who stumbles upon this trend might be wondering “what is the female gaze?” and I cannot provide a solid answer. I always have been under the impression that the female gaze is simply being able to view people as actual humans and not just sexual objects, but Kevin’s case seems to be a little different. His talent is looking nervous and then looking seductive. That’s it. That is all he had to do to finally understand what women want. What an accomplishment for women all over the world! Kevin’s fame has turned sour though as past attempts at tik tok content have come to the limelight. It turns out that Kevin may not be an ally to women. Honestly shocking that a man turns out to be sexist! His past content includes a skit where he beats up a bisexual girl for liking Tyler the Creator and an absolute zinger of a sketch where he pretends to be a boyfriend coming home to his pregnant girlfriend, then when discovering the pregnancy he beats the girls stomach until she bleeds out of her mouth. The joke there is that he is terminating the pregnancy. There are several others where the joke of the video is that he is assaulting women. Kevin has tried to distance himself from these videos claiming they are not him, but it does not take a detective to realize that these videos are in fact him. Kevin has also not been taking criticism lightly. On his twitch streams he is either sexy lip syncing to his chat or reacting to duets/stitches to his video. These reactions end with him either making a joke about the person’s appearance or insinuating that his chat has to hold him back from saying something offensive. The lesson to be learned here is that we do not need to be hyping men up this much, or anyone for that matter. If you are going to put a man on the pedestal as the epitome of the female gaze then do not drag other women down with you.
I appreciate your blog, and share your confusion about Kevin’s label. I don’t understand how someone could call a man the epitome of female gaze? However, like you say, it is unsurprising that negative things came out about his past. Tik tok-ers seem to be willing to do anything to get fame, and thus him going so far as to make horribly sexist sketches is anticipated.
ReplyDeleteHello, what a great blog post! I agree that we should not put random men on pedestals like that and I also believe that it is not very wise to say that real people have mastered the "female gaze". The female gaze is a concept that originated in film spaces, criticizing the depiction of female characters by male directors. I don't really think that the concept of mastering the "female gaze" should be applied to real life people, especially men who make thirst traps on tik toks.
